VC Vacancy at FUTO for 2026 Appointment

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has announced that the office of the Vice-Chancellor will become vacant on 19 June 2026. In line with the Federal Universities of Technology Act, Cap. F23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (2004), the Governing Council has commenced the process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor.

Suitably qualified and interested candidates are hereby invited to apply for the position of Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Owerri.

About the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO)

Founded in 1980, FUTO is one of the first three Federal Universities of Technology established by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The university is located approximately 25 kilometres from Owerri metropolis in Imo State.

By law, FUTO runs academic and professional programmes leading to:

  • Diplomas

  • First degrees

  • Postgraduate and higher research degrees

These programmes focus on engineering, science, agriculture, medical sciences, and related professional fields, with strong emphasis on:

  • Technical competence

  • Innovation and adaptability

  • Applied research

  • Productive and development-oriented skills

Role of the Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Chief Academic Officer of the University and shall:

  • Serve as Ex-Officio Chairman of Senate and Congregation

  • Be a Member of the Governing Council

  • Provide academic, administrative, and strategic leadership

  • Oversee policy implementation, finance, projects, and university administration

Requirements for the FUTO Vice-Chancellor Position

Candidates applying for the Vice-Chancellor position must meet the following criteria:

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • Must be an acclaimed scholar and Professor of high repute

  • Must possess a Ph.D., or for medical professionals, a Postgraduate Medical Fellowship

  • Must have national and international scholarly publications

  • Must be a Professor in a discipline relevant to FUTO’s academic programmes

  • Must have at least 15 years of senior academic experience, including a minimum of 10 years as a Professor

  • Must attach a letter of promotion to Professorship

Leadership and Management Capacity

  • Demonstrated ability to manage people and resources effectively

  • Proven record of attracting research grants and funding

  • Ability to foster peaceful relationships among staff, students, and host communities

  • Capacity to build inclusive working relationships without ethnic, religious, or other bias

Vision and Integrity

  • Must present a clear vision and strategic development plan for the University

  • Strong commitment to merit, fairness, and excellence

  • Must be a person of high integrity, probity, and moral standing

  • Ability to provide respected academic and administrative leadership

Additional Requirements

  • Strong ICT skills and appreciation of digital tools in modern university administration

  • Ability to advise Council on finance, projects, property, and administration

  • Must be in sound physical and mental health, supported by a medical fitness certificate from a recognised public health facility

  • Must not be more than 64 years old by 19 June 2026

Tenure and Conditions of Service

  • The Vice-Chancellor shall serve a single term of five (5) years only

  • Salary and conditions of service shall be as approved for Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities in Nigeria, in line with Federal Government and Governing Council regulations

  1. Submit thirty (30) signed and dated copies of their Curriculum Vitae, each with a passport photograph attached

  2. Each CV must include the names and addresses of three (3) referees

  3. Each referee must send a confidential report directly to the Registrar in a sealed envelope marked:
    “POST OF VICE-CHANCELLOR – REFEREES REPORT” (top left corner)

  4. Submit thirty (30) copies of a Vision Statement / Mission for the University

  5. Candidates nominated by a Search Team must include a signed consent letter
